What Kind of Computer Do You Need for AI Voice Generation?
Musa TTS Team · · 6 min read
Many people assume that AI voices need a huge, expensive computer. Some do. But a lot of useful voice work runs fine on an ordinary laptop.
What you need depends on which voice engine you want to use. This guide explains the parts that matter, in simple terms, and shows which setup suits which job. All the figures for Musa TTS come from our own engine pages and tests.
The four parts that matter
CPU
The CPU is the main brain of your computer. All Windows computers running Musa TTS need a 64-bit CPU with a feature called AVX2. Most CPUs made from about 2015 onward have it.
Light voice engines run on the CPU alone. You do not need any special graphics hardware for them.
Memory (RAM)
RAM is the short-term workspace your computer uses while a program runs. Voice models have to fit into it. 8 GB is the starting point. It is enough for Voice Studio, Musa Solo and Musa Echo. If you want to run the bigger engines on the CPU, or on a Mac, plan for 16 GB.
Disk space
Voice models are stored on your drive. Musa TTS needs about 5 GB free to start. After that, each model adds its own size. The smallest Musa Solo model is 45 MB. Musa Chorus is 3.2 GB, and each extra Language Pack model is another 3.2 GB.
A fast SSD also helps models load more quickly than an older spinning hard drive.
Graphics card (GPU)
A GPU is a separate processor that is very good at the kind of maths AI models use. It is the single biggest speed boost you can get, but it is optional for many jobs.
On Windows, Musa TTS supports NVIDIA cards from the RTX 20 or GTX 16 series and newer, with driver 572 or later and at least 4 GB of GPU memory. You download the free GPU pack, about 3 GB, inside the app.
The GPU pack is for NVIDIA only. On a PC with AMD or Intel graphics, Musa TTS runs on the CPU.
What each engine needs
Here is how the Musa engines compare, from lightest to heaviest.
Voice Studio. The 46 built-in voices run on the CPU and work on everyday laptops and desktops. No GPU needed.
Musa Solo. Fast voice cloning made for the CPU. It runs well with 8 GB of memory on Windows and on Apple Silicon Macs. No GPU needed. Downloads range from 45 MB to 1.2 GB per model.
Musa Echo. Turns one recording into another voice. It runs well on a CPU with 8 GB of memory, and the GPU pack makes it about six times faster. The download is 0.6 GB.
Musa Aria. Expressive English voices with laughs and sighs. It works on a CPU, but slowly. We recommend 16 GB of memory in that case. With a GPU of 4 GB or more, it is much quicker. The download is 2.9 GB. On a Mac, it runs on the CPU.
Musa Chorus. Cloning in 23 languages. It is slow without a GPU and needs 16 GB of memory on the CPU. For the best speed, use a GPU with 6 GB of memory. The download is 3.2 GB.
Musa Sona 600. Cloning in 646 languages. This is the largest engine. On Windows, it needs an NVIDIA GPU with 8 GB of memory and the GPU pack. On a Mac, it needs Apple Silicon with 16 GB of memory. It is not offered on PCs with only a CPU.
You can read more on the engines page, or see our guide to choosing the right engine.
Windows or Mac?
Windows needs Windows 10 22H2 or Windows 11, 64-bit. Windows with an NVIDIA card is the fastest setup for the heavy engines, because of the GPU pack.
Mac needs Apple Silicon, M1 or newer, with macOS 13 or later. Intel Macs are not supported. Macs do not need a GPU pack, because Apple Silicon uses one built-in engine build. Musa Aria and Musa Chorus run on the CPU there, so they are slower than on a good NVIDIA card. If you plan to use them, go for 16 GB of memory.
Linux is not supported at this time.
Good, better, best
Here are three simple setups. These are guides, not strict rules.
An everyday laptop
- 8 GB of memory, no special graphics card
- Good for Voice Studio, Musa Solo and Musa Echo
This covers a lot. You can make narration in 8 languages with built-in voices, clone a voice in 7 languages with Musa Solo, and change the voice in a recording.
A desktop or laptop with a mid-range NVIDIA card
- 16 GB of memory, an NVIDIA GPU with 6 to 8 GB of memory
- Good for every engine
Here is what a mid-range card can do. On an RTX 4060 Ti in our tests, Musa Aria made 24.6 seconds of speech in 7.8 seconds, and Musa Sona 600 made 60 seconds of speech in 9 seconds. Both are faster than real time, which means long scripts finish quickly.
An Apple Silicon Mac with 16 GB of memory
- Good for every engine
- Heavy engines will be slower than on a strong NVIDIA card
This is a great setup for people who already work on a Mac.
How to find out what your computer has
On Windows: Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, then click the Performance tab. You will see your CPU, Memory, Disk and GPU, including GPU memory.
On a Mac: Click the Apple menu, then About This Mac. You will see your chip and memory.
There is an even easier way. Install the free version of Musa TTS and open the Models page. It checks your computer and marks every engine as Ready, Slow or Not supported, with the exact reason. You can see all of this before you download a single model.
Should you buy a new computer?
Probably not yet. Start with what you already own.
Try the free version, use the light engines, and see if they meet your needs. Many people find that Musa Solo or Voice Studio is enough. You only need more power if you want the big multi-language engines, or if waiting on long scripts is slowing down your work.
If you do decide to upgrade, here is what makes the biggest difference for voice work:
- An NVIDIA GPU with at least 8 GB of memory, on Windows.
- 16 GB of system memory or more.
- An SSD with plenty of free space for models.
The CPU matters less once you have a good GPU.
One last tip: before you buy a license, use the free version as your trial on the exact computer you will work on. It costs nothing, and you will know how every engine runs on your machine before you spend a cent.
The short version
For built-in voices and light cloning, any fairly modern computer with 8 GB of memory will do. For expressive voices and many languages, a good NVIDIA GPU or an Apple Silicon Mac with 16 GB of memory makes life much easier. The Models page will tell you exactly where your computer stands.
Try it on your own computer
