Why Your Cloned Voice Sounds Wrong (and How to Fix It)

Musa TTS Team · · 6 min read

You followed the steps, you pressed generate, and the result is disappointing. Maybe it sounds robotic. Maybe it sounds like a distant cousin of the real voice. Maybe the accent has wandered off somewhere strange.

Do not give up. Almost every bad clone comes from one of a handful of causes, and most can be fixed in minutes. This guide lists the common problems, explains why they happen and shows you what to do, with specific tips for Musa TTS.

Start here: the sample

Before you change any setting, listen to your sample on headphones. Most problems begin there, because the engine copies what it hears, including the bad parts.

A good sample has one voice, no background sound and little echo. If you hear noise or a roomy echo, fix that before trying anything else. Our guide to recording a clean voice sample walks you through it.

Problem 1: It sounds noisy or hollow

What you hear: hiss, a metallic ring, or a voice that sounds like it is in a bathroom.

Why it happens: the engine learned the room along with the voice.

The fix: record again in a soft, small room. A closet full of clothes or a bedroom with curtains works well. In My Voices, trim the clip to the cleanest few seconds.

Problem 2: It does not sound like the person

What you hear: a nice voice, but not the right one.

Why it happens: the sample may be too short, too flat, or very different from how the person normally speaks.

The fixes:

  • Use a clip with natural speech, not a stiff reading.
  • Try a slightly longer clip, up to the 10 second range.
  • Make sure the clip has only that person speaking.
  • Try another model. Larger Musa Solo models, such as HQ, are slower but better for final takes.
  • Try another engine. The same voice can sound quite different in Solo, Aria and Chorus. A saved voice works in all of them.

Problem 3: It sounds flat and robotic

What you hear: every sentence has the same tone.

Why it happens: the sample was monotone, the temperature is too low, or the script reads badly out loud.

The fixes:

  • Raise Temperature a little. This setting moves the voice from consistent to expressive. Try 0.5 or so with Musa Solo, then listen.
  • Rewrite long sentences into shorter ones.
  • Add pauses and emphasis with Smart Text Controls.
  • Record a sample with more life in it. A clone follows the energy of its source.

Problem 4: It sounds unstable or changes partway through

What you hear: the voice drifts, or odd sounds appear.

Why it happens: temperature may be too high, or the sample is too long for that engine. Long clips can also confuse the voice learning.

The fixes:

  • Lower Temperature. Around 0.3 is a good steady setting to compare against.
  • Trim the sample to under 10 seconds.
  • Generate long scripts in sensible sections, so you can redo one part instead of the whole thing.

Problem 5: The accent is wrong

What you hear: an English accent in French, or a voice that loses its natural accent.

Why it happens: the engine is mixing the sound of your sample with the new language.

The fixes:

  • In Musa Chorus, use the Reference accent control. Turn it down to stop the original accent from carrying over, or keep it up if you want that accent to stay.
  • Try a Language Pack model if your language has one. These are tuned to one language and accent, such as Brazilian Portuguese or Latin American Spanish.
  • With Musa Sona 600, try the Voice match control. A voice with one accent can struggle in a distant language, so test a few voices.

Problem 6: Words come out wrong

What you hear: a name, a number or a short form is misread.

Why it happens: the engine is guessing at how to read it.

The fixes:

  • Spell tricky words the way they sound.
  • Use say-as markers for dates, times, phone numbers and units.
  • On paid plans, add the word to the Pronunciation Lexicon so it is right everywhere.

Problem 7: There are no emotions

What you hear: a correct but lifeless read, when you wanted a laugh or a sigh.

Why it happens: not every engine can show feeling, and text alone cannot always carry it.

The fixes:

  • Use Musa Aria for English. Add sound tags such as [laugh], [sigh] and [gasp] right in your script.
  • Use the Emotion slider in Musa Chorus.
  • Try sound tags in Musa Sona 600, such as [laughter] and [sigh].
  • Best of all, perform the line yourself and convert it with Musa Echo. Your timing and feeling stay in place, and only the voice changes.

Problem 8: Generation is very slow

What you hear: nothing, for a long time.

Why it happens: the engine is too heavy for your computer, or it is running on the CPU instead of a GPU.

The fixes:

  • Check the Models page. It marks each engine as Ready, Slow or Not supported.
  • On Windows with a supported NVIDIA card, install the free GPU pack.
  • Use a smaller Musa Solo model. Small, Tiny and Micro are very light.
  • Close other heavy apps while generating.

A quick way to test

When you are stuck, do not change everything at once. Use this simple routine.

  1. Pick one test sentence, 15 to 20 words long.
  2. Change one thing, such as the temperature.
  3. Generate and listen.
  4. Keep the better version and change the next thing.

History keeps every take, so you can go back and compare. And because paid plans have no daily limit and no credits, you can run as many tests as you need. On a cloud service that charges by the character, this kind of trial and error costs real money. In Musa TTS it only costs a little time.

When to accept it and move on

Sometimes one voice just does not clone well in a certain language. Certain speaking styles are hard to capture from a short sample. And across hundreds of languages, quality does vary. That is normal. Try a different voice or a different engine before spending hours on it.

It also helps to think about the audience. Listeners are far less picky than you are about your own voice. If the words are clear and the pace is pleasant, it is probably good enough. Have someone else listen before you start over.
